Last night, I discovered the power supply I thought went to my sewing machine does not fit! (It probably goes to a serger that also got rehomed.) As I see it, my options are (1) find power supply and hope it works, then get the old machine tuned up for a total of ~$150, knowing that if it needs repair it will cost even more, or (2) acquire new machine for ~$150-$200.

I am really leaning toward a Brother cs6000i, which has phenomenal ratings across the board (4.5 stars out of ~7500 reviews), is within my price range, and I could, theoretically, pick one up at my local Joann's. It's not necessarily better, but a newer machine is somewhat more likely to last many more years. I have no idea how old the handed-down machine actually is and what sort of other repair it needs. It could need nothing but some love, it could need a new heckin' motor, and I have no way of knowing until after I pay the initial consultation fee. (which is fine, i understand the repair shop is a shop and needs to make money, i am just not sure if this equipment is worth my investment)

Getting a more current model would also mean it's a bit easier (in both effort and money) to find parts for it. Like a walking foot, for example. Also I would have the actual manual in hand and not be relying on the pdf I 'located' on the intertubes.

I'll drop into Joann's and see what I can see tonight, hey?

Edit after checking the Joann's website: It comes with a walking foot?! It's not a separate purchase?! Le fuck. If it's at Joanne's when I get there, I will be taking a new robot friend home. Oh, wait. It's online only. Hrm. That looks awesome, but that's quite the purchase to then ship.

Unsurprising edit: I hit 'buy' and it should be here next Thursday/Friday. :)
