Skill Acquisition is a Process

I got an early birthday present from my mom! A little book(let?) about How to Crochet (along with a note and some cash, which is super nice and I'm excited to use that on prescription sunglasses). So I picked up the cotton yarn and crochet hooks that have been chilling on the coffee table for a while and started working on that 'single chain to begin a project' thing. What even is tension? How do hold yarn? I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to be mucking about with how I'm holding everything as much as I am. And then I had to switch from the variegated green-and-white for a solid purple because I am not really good at determining where stitches are yet. So that attempt went slightly better because I could see the front and back of stitches. But tension is a thing for other people still and I skipped several stitches I should have worked so managed to decrease by about a third for the second row.
Well, at least the yarn isn't offended when I rip it out a thousand times and keep trying. :P
