I'm not much of a crafter, but from my limited amount of knowledge, you shouldn't attach the buttons to the muslin. Doing a basic check for button placement? good idea. Maybe doing a thin basting just to see if there will be major gap issues, but only if you suspect an issue based on how the garment is shaping up.
